Sunday’s Site – Prospect Park Neighborhood, Minneapolis

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

It's hard to miss the distinctive "Witch's Hat" watertower visible from I-94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Built in 1913 on the highest natural point in the city of Minneapolis, it is the landmark of the Prospect Park neighborhood bordered by the University of Minnesota on the west and St. Paul on the east.

The neighborhood was platted in 1885 and was a Minneapolis suburb connected to the city by streetcar in the late 19th century. While not as exclusive as the lakes area in south Minneapolis, this neighborhood had modest Victorians for professors and scholars working at the University of Minnesota. The steep hills, curving streets and Witch's Hat tower all give Prospect Park a strong sense of place. It has been rumored that the tower was Bob Dylan's muse for "All Along the Watchtower".

Prospect Park has quiet, tree-lined streets and a unique 'urban-village' community feel, self-contained like a village set apart within the context of the larger city.

This neighborhood also contains a treasure for architecture fans, the Malcom Willey House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. A private residence located on the south end of Bedford Street, it played a role in determining the path of I-94 to prevent its destruction in the 1950s.
