Sunday’s Site – St. Anthony’s Silver Lake Village

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

When I first discovered charming St. Anthony Village years ago nestled between Northeast Minneapolis and Roseville, I thought it was a Minneapolis neighborhood much like nearby St. Anthony Park is a St. Paul neighborhood. Not so. The two were developed at different times and have distinctly different styles, but it goes beyond that.

St. Anthony Village is an actual city…a first-ring Twin Cities suburb of only 2.5 square miles. When I am out driving with clients between Roseville and Northeast Minneapolis they almost always say "ohhh, I like this area…" as we drive through narrow St. Anthony, only about 12 blocks or so wide. Residents are proud of its small village atmosphere and community closeness. Most metro area communities have a lake and St. Anthony is no exception. It is home to picturesque Silver Lake and Silverwood Park (currently undergoing major construction).

St. Anthony's Silver Lake Village opened in 2006 on the site of the former Apache Plaza, a 1960's indoor shopping mall. It is now a walkable village with loft style condominiums, parks, trails, shopping and dining. One of my clients was one of its first residents, with a condo overlooking a pond and community amphitheater and a bird's eye view of the retail part of the village anchored by Cub Foods and Walmart, connected by streets lined with retail shops and restaurants.

In addition to the typical chain restaurants this village also includes the new, locally-owned Cabina Italian Kitchen, introduced to me by my client who loved being able to walk out her door to dinner. My husband and I recently stopped by the village to do a little shopping and pick up something to eat at Cabina…great food to take out or dine in at affordable prices…my fusili pasta dish was LOADED with shrimp and asparagus!
