There is nothing that gives an area a sense of community quite like a neighborhood coffee shop. The Longfellow area of Minneapolis is dotted with them, and that is a good way to get to know the neighborhood… one with a strong sense of community which includes both economic and ethnic diversity.
Its high demand location was illustrated this week when I listed a cute starter home on Wednesday…an offer has already been accepted! There happen to be three coffee shops less than eight blocks from that house, all on bus lines.
Just down the street on the corner of 37th Ave and 38th Street is the Fireroast Mountain Cafe, a quintessential small eco-conscious neighborhood cafe and coffee shop. They offer local and organic food, homemade bakery items and soups, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, WiFi, kids playroom, artist corner with locally made gifts and outdoor seating.
A few blocks to the west along Minnehaha Avenue is Selam Coffee, a coffee shop which claims to pour the best Ethiopian coffee this side of the Atlantic. They also feature an open mike a couple times a month featuring poetry, spoken word, music and comedy.
Both of these coffee shops have an intimate neighborhood feel, and while the Riverview Cafe and Wine Bar, further east towards the river, also has a Longfellow neighborhood feel its reach is broader partly because of its location at the corner of 38th Street and 42nd Avenue South. This busy corner is an anchor of the Longfellow neighborhood, which also includes the Riverview Theater, Mother Earth Gardens, and Riverview Antiques.
All three coffee shops, not far from each other, have distinct personalities…as diverse as its community. Its location between the river and light rail features easy access to public transportation, river trails, Minnehaha Falls Park, a mix of housing types and price, both residential and commercial/industrial development, economic and ethnic diversity and easy access to both the U of M and St. Paul university communities. All these features combine to give Longfellow neighborhood residents a distinct sense of place and a great urban lifestyle.
