House Blessings

Rituals come easily to many families.  We naturally think to celebrate birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, etc.  But what about moving into a new home?    Changing residence is a time of family transition, or rite of passage, and is the  perfect opportunity for a House Blessing.

House blessings are practiced in many cultures, including Native Americans.  The ritual includes cleansing the house of feelings from the previous occupants, and welcoming into the home the positive energies of happiness, nurturance, support and growth.

Habitat for Humanity celebrates the completion of each new home with a house blessing!  Volunteers, family, friends and neighbors are encouraged to attend.  The ritual can be led by anyone – family member, friend or clergy.  Even me, or you!  A little planning is required.

Resources and ideas for house blessings can be found at the library or on the internet, but here are a few guidelines:

Preparation
Invite family and friends to your house blessing ritual.  Select someone to be the leader (the person with the plan.)  You will need:  candles, bells, drums, and/or noise makers; poems, prayers or songs.  Place an unlit candle in each room of the home.

Cleansing
Beginning in the kitchen (the heart of the home), state the intention of the ritual, followed by a selected poem, prayer or song.  Follow the leader through each room and around the property, making a racket to clear out the old energy.

Blessing
Go through the house a second time, lighting a candle and saying a brief blessing in each room.  End in the kitchen, where everyone will celebrate with a final prayer and a toast to the new home! (Don't forget to blow out the candles when you're finished!)

By joining together with family and friends for a house blessing, you can truly make the home 'yours!'

Blessings to you, from Beata Rydeen
