Minnesota… Land of 10,000 Choirs

Choral singing in Minnesota is taken quite seriously – begun when Scandinavian Lutherans started moving here in the 1800s.  Choir1They brought with them traditions of singing… which inspired strong choral programs in Scandinavian Lutheran Colleges such as St. Olaf, Gustavus Adolphus, Concordia and Augburg in Minnesota, Luther nearby in Iowa.

Today, Minnesota public schools and top-notch collegiate music programs invest in the choral tradition, and community, religious, and professional choirs keep people singing throughout adulthood… why Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Choirs in addition to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Our tradition of choral singing is never more evident than in December!  If you love choral music, you will love living in Minnesota… known throughout the country as 'the choral state.'

Central-choirs

The first weekend in December sees thousands of students from Lutheran Colleges singing in annual Christmas concerts. We attended Advent Vespers presented by Augsburg College at Central Lutheran in Minneapolis this weekend… a great way to start the season.

Next weekend the Lutheran choral tradition continues with the annual Christmas Festival concert presented by the National Lutheran Choir at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis.

Not a fan of Lutheran choirs? No problem… there are concerts, events and theater performances for every taste… every day!

Macalaster-africanExamples of the diversity we experienced this Friday-Monday…

  • Friday was the Augsburg choral concert.
  • Last night we attended a performance of the outstanding Macalaster African Music Ensemble… you can feel this music throughout your body and the whole auditorium was pulsing.
  • This afternoon we are heading to The Depot Coffee House in Hopkins for a She Rock She Rock all-female jam/open mic of 1970's rock 'n roll.
  • Tomorrow night we are attending the annual community carol sing-along presented by the Roseville String Ensemble.
