Where is HomesMSP?

"Where is HomesMSP?" is a lighthearded attempt to help people get to know and appreciate our wonderful Twin Cities a little better. Each week I pick a theme, then each weekday post a picture of some place in the metro area relating to that theme. It can be fun for people who already know the area to identify and remember sites and perhaps learn about some new ones… and for people who don't know Minneapolis-St. Paul very well to lean more about it.

Here are some of this week's daily posts, looking at noteworthy houses…

House-willey

Where is HomesMSP?  Today's historic home is still a private residence, built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1934 for an administrator at the U of M. Do you know where it is? ~ It's the Malcolm Willey House, located in Prospect Park at 255 Bedford St SE. Before I-94 came through (its route supposedly planned to miss this historic residence) they had sweeping views of the Mississippi River. Frank Lloyd Wright named it "Gardenwall".

House-cutts

Where is HomesMSP?  Another Prairie School house today, one of the designers the long-time chief draftsman for Louis Sullivan. This house is now open to the public. Can you identify it? ~ It's the Purcell-Cutts House at 2328 Lake Place near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis, one of the most significant examples of Prairie School architecture in the country. Owned by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, it is open for tours the second weekend of the month.

House-mtm

Where is HomesMSP? Today's house is pure fancy, the house of Mary Richard's apartment when the Mary Tyler Moore showed first aired 40 years ago… a TV breakthrough with the first never married, independent career woman as the central character. Where is it? ~ You won't find it at 119 N Weatherly. It is near Lake of the Isles, a private residence at 2104 Kenwood Parkway.

House-susanska

Where is HomesMSP? Today's house, built in 1996, was the home of the architect who wrote the "Not So Big House" and started a movement. Who is she and where is the house? ~ The architect is Sarah Susanska, and her former home which inspired her books overlooks Battle Creek Park in St. Paul on Upper Afton Terrace. It is still a private residence.

To see today's site visit http://www.facebook.com/HomesMSP …become a fan to follow us throughout the metro and guess "Where is HomesMSP?" each day… the answer is posted as a comment the following day. The theme of the first week was churches in honor of Easter…this week it has been houses…next week the theme will be bridges.

Some weeks will feature neighborhoods, sometimes restaurant themes, arts and sports venues, it will vary. Let me know if you have a theme you would like featured!
